Kapalua Bay, Hawaii, one of the best beaches in the world
Dine or relax, snorkel or snooze, one of the world’s most beautiful beaches offers it all

Was that a whale spout or the lingering splash of a dolphin out in the deeper water? I’m pretty sure that was a turtle that just broke the surface and looked around only a few feet away. And that’s just what’s on the surface at Kapalua Bay. There is an aquarium below, waiting to be explored. There is soft sand and grass on which to relax above.
A short drive from the cacophony of Ka’anapali and amid the quiet breezes that cool Kapalua and Napili is the pocket beach at Kapalua Bay. Its calm waters, with lava points on either side, welcome children, snorkelers and those looking for a tranquil day at the beach. Kapalua Bay has also been named one of the 10 best beaches in Hawaii and one of the "Best Beaches in the World" by Conde’ Nast Traveler, but don’t be afraid of crowds here. You can still find a soothing tropical retreat.
If you’re staying in the Kapalua area, the free transportation will bring you to the top of the parking lot. If you’re staying in Napili, it’s just a short walk from your room. And if you’re driving here from another part of the island, you might have some luck in the small parking lot, but get here early in the day or come late in the afternoon. The coconut grove that borders the beach offers some shade and there are grassy areas in which to spread your towels between your trips to the water.
Snorkel equipment can be rented from a small shack at the end of the bay. Because of the protective reef, the water is calm and marine life is abundant. Without waves to tug and pull, it’s easy to entice children or beginners to explore and easy to teach them how to snorkel. You can even do a shore dive from the easy access, sandy beach.
Hungry? The nearby Honolua Store, just a shuttle ride away, is a great place to pick up food for a picnic on the beach. Or, walk to the top of the parking lot and turn into the Napili Kai resort for the Sea House Restaurant. Casual is welcome here and it’s perfect for a lunch with a view. You may like it so well you’ll come back, after you’ve changed from your beach attire, to admire one of their famous sunsets from just about any table in the restaurant. Make sure you have plenty of pixels left in your camera to capture all the colors.
